When our international flight first showed up delayed for 30 minutes, I jumped right in the customer service line to brainstorm alternate routes.
Because I was proactive in planning for a potential missed connection, the attendants could rebook me before alternative routes filled up.

Report delays and missed flights to customer service when back at home for vouchers.
In the past, American Airlines has provided me with future flight vouchers for plane delays.
I plan on requesting reimbursement via email for their scheduled plane maintenance at the same time our flight was set to take off.
